Affordable Health Insurance

Affordable health insurance coverage is becoming even rarer nowadays. With today's economy, higher gas prices and lower median incomes, it is especially important to cut costs wherever possible. Many people are tempted to cut out their health insurance altogether to save the added expense. This can be a perfectly acceptable solution granted you never get sick and never have an accident. However, those are some pretty extreme odds to play. If you do happen to get sick or have an accident, you will sorely regret not having health insurance once the bills start coming in for physicians, lab work, medications and hospital expenses. Paying the exorbitant costs of medical care is not the best way to save money in the long run.

Instead, what you want to do is weigh your risks and take a look at your medical history. You can then find affordable health insurance by a number of means. If you already have insurance, consider whether or not you need as much coverage as you have and if it would be feasible to increase your deductible amounts. If you have a relatively positive medical history and do not take advantage of the full spectrum of your insurance, you may want to think about altering your coverage somewhat. This will save you hundreds of dollars each year in annual premiums. You will have a financial liability if something happens and higher out of pocket expenses but this option will be much more affordable than completely paying for everything out of pocket.

For example, if you have health insurance with a five hundred dollar deductible, consider increasing that to one thousand dollars. You will pay less each month in health insurance premiums but if you are hospitalized, you will have to pay double the amount out of pocket. To counteract this cost, you may want to put aside some extra money each month until you reach your deductible amount. Putting one thousand dollars into a savings account will generate interest and you will have the money available in case you need it. You only have to do it once but you will have a lifetime of savings. Compare this option of paying one thousand dollars out of pocket with health insurance to paying tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket.

Probably the best option in affordable health insurance will come from your employer. If you work for a company that offers employee health insurance benefits, take advantage of it. In most cases, the employer pays some or all of the employees' premiums. If you have a spouse or children, you will be able to add them on to your health insurance plan as dependents but will have to pay for them by getting the premium amount automatically deducted from your check. However, this is a much more affordable option for health insurance than if you go through a private carrier and paying for the premiums yourself. Even if the premiums are high, you are still getting what amounts to free money from your employer and when all is added up the sum will likely be much less than self insuring your entire family.

Not everyone is lucky enough to be employed by a company that offers health insurance benefits, though. If this is the case, you will need to do some research and shop around to get multiple quotes. Look to local health insurance brokers as well as on the Internet for quotes for coverage. It is important when collecting health insurance quotes to carefully read and understand everything you are given. The cheapest health insurance might not be the best value. Make sure you are comparing apples to apples and that you fully understand what coverage you have, what restrictions are in place, deductible amounts and what your annual premiums will be.

Finding affordable health insurance can be a daunting task, especially if you do not have the option of employer driven and subsidized health insurance benefits. However, it is beneficial to have at least some type of coverage in case of accident or illness. Getting stuck with expensive bills for medical care you have to pay out of pocket will be costlier in the long run than if you take some time to research affordable health insurance options.
